Maintaining your trailer between services

Like anything exposed to salt water and the elements it’s important you look after your trailer. Here’s how to keep your trailer in good nick between services.

  • Wash with fresh water thoroughly after use. Make sure you spray well in to the hubs, and brakes if fitted.
  • Go for a slow drive around the block after washing your trailer, it helps the brakes dry out.
  • Ensure all frame bolts are tight, rust free, and well maintained
  • Regularly check your bearings. Simply jack up one side and check for lateral play in your wheels. If you notice excess movement get in touch with us immediately. A broken bearing can ruin your holiday and they’re a small and inexpensive item to replace.
  • Check your bearing grease, white tinted means it’s been compromised and you’ll need to re-grease. Be sure not to over pack your bearings.
  • Before submersing your trailer for boat launching, ensure you’ve allowed for a cool down period after long drives or heavy braking. This not only gives the bearing grease time to cool and protect against water contamination, it also allows your brake pads and rotors to cool. This is important as they can warp if rapidly cooled.
  • Make sure your tyres always have the correct pressure. You can even have your tyres filled with nitrogen. It’s inexpensive, slows leakage, and runs cooler - giving your tyres a longer hassle free life.
  • Service your trailer annually, more often if you use it regularly. If your trailer has brakes it’s a safety requirement.
